THE IMPORTANCE OF RAW MATERIALS, HIGHLIGHTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE EC, URSULA VON DER LEYEN
The Industry Days of 2021 EU were officially launched on February 24th.
In her opening speech, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, launched a series of positive statements in support of the Sector, and highlighted the importance of raw materials several times, especially essential raw materials for a sustainable european future:
"Green and digital technologies currently depend on a series of scarce raw materials. We import lithium for electric cars, platinum to produce clean hydrogen and metallic silicon for solar panels. 98% of the rare earth elements we need come from a single supplier, China, and that is not sustainable. Therefore, we must diversify the supply chains and, at the same time, we must invest in circular technologies that reuse resources instead of constantly extracting them. This is the goal of our Action Plan on Critical Raw Materials. That is why we proposed the creation of a European Alliance of Raw Materials."
